Winter afternoon at Washhouse

Living on the east coast of Australia the early mornings are often regarded as the best time of the day. With a coastline that predominantly faces due east, a coastal view that can be readily accessed, and the potential for a dynamic softer light it is somewhat of a default shooting time for me. On the other hand late afternoons and sunset can be just as rewarding if I am able to find a location that has some northerly aspect that will open up the scene to a lovely afternoon glow. The Pass at Byron Bay is a perfect example where the late afternoons and sunsets are a delight, particularly in winter. Manly is another spot that will also offer up some beautiful afternoons from its various beaches facing a range of directions.

Washhouse Beach NSW.

Washhouse Beach near Dunbogan NSW is another favourite of mine, mainly because it is usually very quiet, but also the rock platform exposed at low tide is always a joy to explore. Contained below the cliffs of Katang Nature Reserve the beach is only accessible from the he Pilot Beach end. The furthest stretch of the beach away from the carpark remains natural and difficult to access at high tide, so you can often enjoy the place to yourself.

On this winter afternoon the tide was coming up to high, and the rock platform was submerged, but the rocky shore was still accessible (just) and the afternoon sun was reaching into the arc of the beach with a lovely warm glow.

Washhouse Beach, NSW

While I was rock hopping and trying to find a composition Harry was further up the beach looking for his own capture. We don’t often see too many fishermen here at Washhouse but Harry is always keen to cast out. It was a lovely evening, and with no surf around there was nothing better than to get the feet wet and embrace the cool evening breeze of this winter afternoon at Washhouse.
